In mid 2006 Ian Duddridge (Calypso Consulting) was contracted to provide technical services in the studio design, layout, equipment specifications as well as acoustic noise analysis and design specifications and management support for the main building architect. Tikendra Singh of Acoustic Research Lab provide the acoustic expertise and Telesto undertook the installation and commissioning of the system. The work commenced in November 2006 and the station went live with two services in mid January 2007.
The project entailed designing and building a broadcast studio centre for FM radio on 3 channels. This required the conversion of existing warehouse type building where the facilities were to be built in a studio block on the first floor. The studio complement of 4 on air self-op studios, a talk studio, 2 production studios, voice booth, 2 voice tracking booths and a master control room.
The system proposed was again based on the tried and proven Klotz Aeon Split Consoles with a central Klotz Vadis router and fibre interconnection. The design allows for multiple redundant routing and for the emergency studio to be assigned to any transmission channel in the event of a failure of hardware or software or for critical maintenance. The facility, although built to strict budget, has the ability allow for expansion and the addition of extra features as required by the program staff in the future.
The technical build and commissioning was undertaken in a short time as the construction works and building services took longer than expected. The current staff who were also on air from an existing facility had to accommodate the change of environment, equipment and software in a very short time. It was a credit to all involved that the changeover went so smoothly.
