Virgin Radio – Thailand

The completion of a major broadcast infrastructure development for Virgin Bec-Tero in Bangkok, Thailand, was a major milestone for the company. The project started life in 2004 as little more than a sketch of the basic studio layout and brief from the client to realise the best constructed, finished and technically advanced studios in the region.

The resulting design met the clients needs exactly with the broadcast centre studio block occupying 1000m2 of floor space on the 23rd floor of the Maleenont Tower. The facility has been designed for 22 studios of which 8 are dedicated self-operated format on air studios, the remainder used for production, news contribution, voice tracking and dubbing. There is enough capacity for 16 transmission paths and associated incoming and outgoing outside broadcast lines. The impressive studio reception area with its great sweep of equipment racks bathed in a red glow of subtle lighting greets the visitor to the facility. Despite the problems of a low roof height, the builders, EAD-AV Ltd, managed to squeeze all the necessary air handling, cable ways and fire equipment in to the roof space without compromising the acoustic design criteria.

The flexible technical design was implemented by Telesto using Klotz Digital DCII audio mixers and the Klotz Digital Vadis integrated routing and control system which enables each studio to be customised to the current operational needs. The fault tolerant design uses five Vadis main frames for audio routing, talkback and control assignment to ensure total flexibility and is fully upgradeable. All audio between the various locations is networked via multi mode fibre optic cables while the separate control network is Ethernet based. The router is the ‘’star point’’ of the audio and control network and redundant audio connections for the transmission paths are in place between the key studios and the router. Master and slave control PCs ensure control redundancy. Customised TFT touch control panels are used throughout the facility for advanced controls such as Transmission Path and outside broadcast return line assignment.

Also of interest is the fact that using the programmable facilities of the Klotz mixers, is that information on the particular DJ on–air can be made available for information display panels outside the on-air studio and around the studio facilities.

Lindsay Muggridge, Chief Engineer commented
"Virgin Radio Thailand invested a great deal of capital in this venture and the completed studios far exceeded our expectations. This is mainly due to the professionalism of Telesto Broadcast Solutions, who installed and designed the electronic component. With Telesto's input, Virgin now has "state-of-the-art" world class digital studios. To say that it is the best broadcasting complex in Asia, would be an understatement."
